Bankers Recognize 15th Anniversary of National Teach Children to Save Day
BISMARCK–April 11, 2011– Bankers from across North Dakota will be trading in their balance sheets for classroom blackboards on Tuesday, April 12. With Americans spending more and saving less, young people often don’t learn the importance of saving. To help reverse this trend, bankers will visit classrooms to teach young people their financial ABC’s.
Bank of North Dakota (BND) and the North Dakota Bankers Association (NDBA) will be holding a financial presentation at Custer Elementary School in Mandan for students Kindergarten through 5th grade on Tuesday, April 12th. Strong state support of this day will also be evident with the involvement of First Lady Betsy Dalrymple. The 2:00 p.m. presentation will include money trivia, some money magic and a “Super Savings Sundae” budgeting lesson involving lots of ice cream and toppings.
“There is an enormous need for financial education and bankers from across the state are rising to the challenge,” said Eric Hardmeyer, president and CEO of BND. “The average American family spends an estimated $1.22 for every $1 it earns. It is critical that the next generation values saving over spending.”
Organized by the American Bankers Association Education Foundation (ABAEF), 2011 marks the 15th anniversary of National Teach Children to Save Day. The North Dakota Bankers Association assists banks by providing lesson plans and resource materials that can be used in the classrooms.
“We are extremely pleased with the involvement of so many banks across the state on this day,” said Rick Clayburgh, president and CEO of NDBA. “We are making strides in our goal to bring focus to the growing problem of financial illiteracy in our state.”
